Mayday

So, the 1st of May 2003 in Scotland consisted of...
  • No Beltaine fire festival the night before. Apparently, the police wanted the Beltaine fire society to obtain a public performance license and pay for the "cost" of policing, which they decide and charge.
  • No holiday or demo. Why, that would be so uncouth! There is a proper British "bank" holiday later on.
  • Elections, naturally on a Thursday. Only in Britain... There's nothing terribly wrong about elections on a Thursday, just that you are supposed to take them in your stride, with no disruption to the working week.
  • Elections being largely pointless on account of the British electoral system. At least the independent candidate, Margo McDonald got re-elected.
I think this country is somewhat conservative.
